Blood and blood products must be used shortly after they are collected, so the need is ongoing. According to the Red Cross, only about 3% of eligible people donate each year.
In January of 2022, the Red Cross declared its first-ever blood crisis in the US, due to complications of COVID-19. To this day, blood continues to be in short supply. According to America's Blood Centers, which oversees about 60% of the US blood supply, as of February 8, 2023, more than two thirds of their 59 community blood centers have just three-days of blood or less, with nearly a third having just one day of supply.
